Somewhere around the summer of 2015 I had come to not a fork in the road but a seemingly dead end. For the first time in my life I couldn't see ahead. Or perhaps really, at 59, the road head seemed finite. The grains of sand left in the egg timer seemed far fewer than the bulk that had already passed. For the first time in my life there wasn't a passion lighting beacon. How could I continue to make my mark and thrive?
No matter what I've done in my life there's always been a purpose, a contribution to something larger. As a younger man that was probably more focused on technological and futuristic. As I got older it became more about society, economy and the planet. I tell folks I've got a lot of stories but no assets. It's fun to tell the stories but worrisome when you get older thinking you have little to fall back on.
When I looked back my career was focused on moving BIG needles. That career and education by the way was more accidental or rather I prefer serendipity. You see I've always followed what interested me. What was about the next important thing I saw happening. So in the 80's it was micro computers and networks. In the 90's it was re-tooling business structures from 20th century to 21st century orientation. In the 00's it was about creating business excellence and sustainability. I've loved doing all this and it's taken me to some interesting places and situations. Yet here I was at 59 not knowing what's next and that's when I found Shaklee.
Shaklee was just a little known company to me at the time. Something to do with nutrition. Something to do with multi-level marketing. A good friend of mine asked me for my opinion about Shaklee from a sustainability point of view. Just how good were they in relation to being a good steward of our ecology, environment and social economy? What I found was not one of the greatest sustainability champions on the planet but a business movement that provided a model that most could learn from. As I peeled back the layers or really "petals" of this amazing company my spirit began to rise. Their mission of Creating a Healthier Life for everyone and a Better Life for anyone that wants it just lifted me up. I found a new way to make a contribution to the world and at the same time thrive in a way that I could be proud of. This wasn't about trying to move a big needle anymore it was about trying help move thousands of little needles. And that's when Better Health Better Planet was born.
